The New Canvas of Motion Media: The Bershka Store in Japan
Motion Media has been one of the most diverse and interesting fields amongst the design world. What’s intriguing about Motion Media is how it is always reaching into other forms of media to create new visual experiences for its audience.
In March of 2011, the first Bershka store (a retail clothing company) was opened in Japan. To celebrate its grand opening, the store installed a system of projectors and sensors to create an interactive experience for its customers. Large black projection closures were installed in the walkways. The closures displayed abstract aquatic-like organisms that reacted when customers walked by. Projections were also displayed on the floor, so the organisms would react to their movement when customers walked passed it.
The way these motion media projects were presented really worked with the spirit of the Bershaka brand and the experience of being in their stores. Observing this interactive installation, as well as others like it, has made me excited about the future of Motion Media.
As companies move closer to making affordable portable projectors, we will embark on something that is truly unique. We will begin to see Motion Media animations on almost every surface of the world. No longer will the aspect ratios of television, mobile, and movie screens hold Motion Media designers back. They will be able to literally use the world as their canvas.
