Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany
New Identity for the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation
New Identity for the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation
I had a dream when I was a student in design school. I dreamed of visiting Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. It was a cloudy day in Dessau, in the spring of 2007, when I visited Bauhaus and I was so excited. The Bauhaus Building is a symbol of modern design.
According to Wikipedia, “the Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name, and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during the first years of its existence. Nonetheless, it was founded with the idea of creating a ‘total’ work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography.” If you are not familiar with Bauhaus, I urge you to Google it.
This year, design studio Hort has created a new identity for the iconic and culture-shaping Bauhaus Dessau. The new identity included a change in their corporate font. Eike Konig of Hort explains, “Being the most generic and incidental typeface, Courier was selected as the new corporate font. To guarantee a unique identity, we changed the capital ‘A’ of Courier according to Herbert Bayer’s well-known logo on the front of the Bauhaus Dessau building.” Their new identity It is a great example of minimal design.
Bauhaus still inspires me!
